The NJIN Server System

PILOT and TOLIP are computer systems operated by Rutgers University for the New Jersey Intercampus Network, Inc. (NJIN). NJIN is a non-profit corporation whose institutional members are New Jersey colleges and universities. The mission of NJIN is "connecting people and information". NJIN has played a key role in facilitating an understanding and use of information technologies throughout higher education in New Jersey.

Summary of Services

Operation of statewide communication servers: Pilot, Tolip

    * Twin SUN Ultra 1 Model 170's; both are attached to the Rutgers University Network.
    * Accounts available to faculty and staff at any higher education institution in NJ, excluding Rutgers.
    * Operations schedule: 7 days/24 hours
    * Normal Unix OS features
    * Quick Reference command summary card
    * Special interface for novice users (LUSH)
    * Electronic mail, including local editors
    * Full Internet access: host name: pilot.njin.net
    * Native CREN (Bitnet) access
    * UUCP services
    * Robust news services; nearly 10,000 groups - Netnews and Listserv; UPI wire feed - Clarinet
    * Dial-up access through RUNet terminal services
    * Access to public RUNet features: IRIS - online library card catalog; INFO - Campus Wide Information System.; White Pages - all faculty, staff, and students.
    * Commercial national weather services.
    * Newsfeeds to NJIN Schools.
    * Daily interaction via INTERNET and UUCP
    * TCP/IP Name Service Both primary and secondary level service
