Connectivity

Colleges and Universities can connect to the facility at William Paterson for satellite uplinking of their programs using any of the following:

a. IDLS direct connection – This option is available to institutions in the North Jersey LATA.(201,908,732,973 area codes)

b. ITFS connection via the NJN backbone. Origination points into the NJN backbone via ITFS include NJIT or Mercer County College.

c. ISDN – This option is available to all institutions. (The cost of the ISDN calls depend on distance.)

d. Transportable "Flyaway" unit for colleges and universities anywhere in New Jersey. This equipment uses a digital backhaul uplink to satellites to reach WPU and the analog uplink facility. This unit can be used to uplink and downlink simultaneously for interactive two way applications.

e. Microwave – The microwave equipment at WPU connects to the NJN tower in Montclair, New Jersey. The institutions in the northern LATA can use IDLS to connect to this microwave link to NJN for interactive teleconferences. The institutions in the Delaware Valley LATA can use IDLS to reach Mercer County College to connect to the NJN microwave network to reach the uplink facility at WPU.

Costs

Colleges and university users do not pay for the use of the facility but they must pay for the satellite transponder time which is arranged through William Paterson University.

-Sample or typical costs…Satellite time approximately $900 per hour.
