presents

 Java Basics for Educational Applications

April  29 1998
9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Rutgers University, Busch Campus
Instructors: Rick Anderson and Casey Palowitch

The NJIN Internet Technology Center will sponsor a full day, hands-on workshop on "Java Basics for Educational Applications."  This workshop will cover basic Java language syntax, programming principles, and important new Java APIs such as Servlets and Java Beans.

Techniques for building scalable small applications to solve specific problems will be stressed.  We will look at a few case examples, such as WebEq (http://www.webeq.com), a tool for creating and displaying mathematical expressions in Web pages. In addition, we will examine code examples that stress Object Oriented principles of code re-use and sharing. The hands-on section will cover compiling Java programs and using Sun's Java Studio for quick project building.

The ideal candidate for this workshop is someone who has bought a book on Java, and is looking for a jump start in order to move onto writing applications. Extensive prior experience with Java programming is not required, but some familiarity with Java or another programming language will be useful.  Experience with Unix environment and X windows is a plus. Come with a project in mind.
