New Jersey Intercampus Network (NJIN)
Presents
Faculty Colloquia on Distance Education
The New Jersey Intercampus Network (NJIN) is pleased to announce its
Faculty Colloquium Series on emerging issues in distance education. Each
colloquium, sponsored by NJIN's Distance Learning Academic Advisory
Board (DLAAB), will be conducted at four sites simultaneously via
Interactive television (ITV). The Colloquia are designed as informal
session where faculty, administrators, and staff from NJIN member
institutions can come together with experts in the field of distance
learning to share ideas and information. Each colloquium will feature a
guest speaker or panel of presenters as well as the opportunity to
engage in discussion with colleagues from across the state. Further
details on each event will be announced as the dates approach.
Participation in the NJIN Colloquia on Distance Education is free to
faculty, administrators, and staff of NJIN member institutions.
Friday, November 19, 2:00 - 4:00 PM: "Online Courses: Buy or Build?"
Sites: Fairleigh Dickinson University Teaneck, College of St. Elizabeth,
Brookdale Community College, Gloucester County College
A number of higher education
institutions have decided to hire outside companies to construct
distance learning courses and environments. Others have built their
distance learning infrastructure in-house, and have depended upon
faculty to develop online courses. Our panelists will discuss the pros
and cons of what was characterized in the lead article of the October 29
issue of "The Chronicle" as the "arranged marriage" of college and
commerce.
Presenters:
Michael B. Sperling is Acting Dean of University College, as well as
Professor of Psychology, at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck,
NJ. Dr. Sperling previously served as Assistant Provost for Educational
Technology and as Chair of the Psychology Department. He is an
Executive Committee Member for the Council of Fellows of the American
Council on Education and is a board member for the Psychoanalytic
Research Society of the Division of Psychoanalysis of the American
Psychological Association.
Chuck Chulvick is Dean of Information Technologies, at Raritan Valley
Community College, with responsibility for supporting the Library,
computing services and distance education. Mr. Chulvick has over 25
years of experience supporting instructional technology in higher
eduation at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, Seton Hall University
and the University of Scranton. He has also worked as a cunsultant for
SCT Corporation. Mr. Chulvick is Secretary of the Operating Board of
the New Jersey Virtual Community College Consortium.
Dr. Mark Kassop is Professor of Sociology and Coordinator of Distance
Learning at Bergen Community College. Dr. Kassop has been teaching
