The NJIN Internet Technology Project
presents

Active Server Pages

DATE: November 17, 1999 or November 24, 1999
TIME: 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM
LOCATION: Hill Center, Room 009
Rutgers University
Piscataway, New Jersey

This workshop will teach students to use Active Server Pages (ASP) to create Web database interfaces. Making heavy use of demonstrations and hands-on practice, the objective of this workshop is to impart practical skills to students wishing to enhance their institutions' Web presence by connecting databases to their Web sites. During this course students will learn the concepts and components of Active Server Pages, as well as the steps to setup and configure development and production ASP server environments. As part of this workshop, we will introduce students to Visual InterDev 6.0, Microsoft's current Integrated Development Environment (IDE). Using both raw code and the IDE we will cover the basics of ASP scripting with VBScript and explain the process of managing states and events with application and session objects. The workshop will culminate with lecture, demonstrations, and exercises on scripting connections to a Access 2000 database using ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) to display information on a Web site.

Prerequisites: A good working knowledge of HTML and Web servers is recommended. Some experience with a scripting language is desirable, though not required.

Optional Textbook: Beginning Active Server Pages 2.0, Wrox Press, 1998.

Instructor: Michael Dobe

Mr. Dobe, who is a former staff member of NJIN and Rutgers University, has extensive Internet experience including the design, development and maintenance of Web sites. He is a consultant and lecturer on computer networking, the Internet and Web design. He is currently teaching a Webmaster certification course at two community colleges.
